Job Description

At Metro Trains Sydney (MTS), safety is at the heart of everything we do. We’re looking for an experienced Operations & Rail Safety Trainer to join our Learning & Development team and play a critical role in building and maintaining safe, competent rail operations across our network.

This is a hands‑on role suited to an operational rail professional who is passionate about safety, capability building and sharing real‑world experience through high‑quality training and competency assessment.

About the Role

Reporting to the Learning & Development Manager, you will deliver rail operations and Rail Safety Rules training and conduct competency assessments to ensure our people have the skills and knowledge required to safely perform their roles.

You’ll work closely with operational leaders and stakeholders across the business, supporting operational readiness, service changes, and continuous improvement through learning.

Key responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Deliver rail operations training programs and refresher training
  • Deliver Rail Safety Rules training and associated competency requirements
  • Conduct competency assessments, including initial, refresher and remedial assessments
  • Undertake competence assurance and Verification of Competency (VOC) assessments
  • Support the development and review of rail operations and safety training materials
  • Maintain accurate training and competency records within LMS and competency systems
  • Support training activities linked to operational readiness and service changes
  • Capture operational learning from incidents and embed improvements into training programs
  • Liaise with operational managers to ensure ongoing competency compliance
  • Contribute to a strong safety‑first culture across the organisation

About You

You’re an experienced rail operations professional who brings credibility, strong communication skills and a practical approach to training in a safety‑critical environment.

You will ideally bring:

Qualifications

  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment
  • Certificate IV in Network Control (or equivalent rail operations qualification)

Experience

  • Experience working as a Train Controller or Traffic Controller within a rail operations environment
  • Strong experience applying and interpreting Rail Safety Rules in an operational rail network
  • Experience delivering operational training and/or conducting competency assessments
  • Exposure to operational readiness, incident management or service recovery activities

Skills & Capabilities

  • Strong understanding of rail operational procedures and safety requirements
  • Excellent facilitation and communication skills
  • Ability to translate operational procedures into practical, engaging training
  • High attention to detail with a strong compliance focus
  • Well-developed planning and organisational skills
  • Safety & compliance requirements
  • Commitment to working within the MTS Safety Management System and Rail Safety National Law
  • Alignment with MTS environmental and sustainability requirement
